Mortgage Crises Affecting Divorce Settlements Nationwide

July 31, 2008

Parsippany, NJ (PRnine – July 31, 2008) – Today’s mortgage crisis is affecting most couples that are in the process of getting divorced.  In order to combat this there are several steps that divorce attorneys can work into their process to better assist their clients.

In an effort to improve the financial outlook of a person going through a divorce as well as help the attorney do a better job for their client,, an online continuing legal education platform teamed up with author and mortgage planner Dave Muti to create a program that will help attorneys better assess their clients’ circumstances.

Attorneys that are interested in learning how a mortgage will impact the settlement strategies for their clients and earn continuing legal education (CLE) credits at the same time should visit to watch the program.

“In this time of economic uncertainty, it was nice to be able to create a program that has a duel purpose; the attorney gets CLE credits and their clients will have better representation when houses and mortgages are involved” says Muti.  The program is only 50 minutes long and reviews the importance of having the divorce client meet with a mortgage planner months before the settlement negotiations begin.  It reviews how credit affects not only new mortgage options and affordability but
also uncovers how one spouse may have run up credit card debt unbeknownst to the other which in turn will affect the division of the assets.

Much of the content for the program was excerpted from Muti’s book entitled Mortgages: What You Need to Know.  His book breaks down the moving parts of the mortgage process to empower the individual to take control of their finances.  The main theme, says Muti “is to simply slow down and take the time to understand what you are doing.  Once you slow down and take the time it is not that complicated.”  Muti’s book offers many how-to-do steps, questions and forms to use when a person is
considering hiring a mortgage professional.
